Replacing the Grocery Store Challenge - Part 1

I am joining in the challenge over at Our Simple Farm.  It's a great way to focus your attention on filling your pantry with healthy foods you have grown yourself and eliminate foods from the store.

Today, I am supposed to list those fruits and vegetables my family consumes and those we wish to consume.  It sounds easy enough, right?

Fruits we consume:

apples
peaches
plums
apricots
cherries
bananas
oranges
grapefruit
tangerines
grapes
blueberries
strawberries
raspberries
pineapple
cantaloupe
watermelon
honeydew

Vegetables we consume:

green beans
corn
peas
broccoli
cauliflower
spinach
lettuce
cucumbers
green and red peppers
carrots
radishes
zucchini
pumpkin
onions
garlic
celery
tomatoes
potatoes
cabbage
pinto beans
black beans
kidney beans
corn for popping

Now, most of these we eat on a regular basis, depending on what's in the house at the time.  We don't have anything stored up from a garden because we just moved in last summer.  However, the plan is to store up as much as possible so we don't have to rely on a store's produce section.

I have italicized those foods which I use less often than others.  These are items I want to use more of.  Of course, it will depend on the kids learning to like them.   In addition to these I wish to grown my own herbs as well as sunflowers for seeds.

I also have underlined those foods which are used as a starch rather than a vegetable.

What about you?  What veggies or fruits are used most in your family?  What veggie is the hardest to get your family to eat even though you like it?

  1. I'm loving this post.... and challenge. We mostly eat green beans, corn, carrots, zucchinni and squash canned from the garden during the winter. I just placed my seed order for this year and I'm trying some new for us things: parsnips, turnips, beets, celery and peas. We need a little more variety in our cellar.

    1. I have all my seeds. I have had them for a few months. Is that bad? I'm new to this. I applaud you for eating parsnips, turnips, and beets. I am not a fan. I just don't care for the flavor of turnips. Parsnips, well, I am not sure I have had them. I have eaten beets before, but I preferred the pickled beets my grandma made. I haven't eaten them for years.

  2. During the winter, I use pretty much only what I've canned except for pinto beans and kidney beans and peas (never have enough peas for this household)
We use summer squash, tomatoes, green beans, onions, potatoes, winter squash, butternut squash, and pumpkins. For fruits during the winter, they consist of oranges and grapefruit fresh, and then canned peaches and applesauce, and frozen blueberries, raspberries, and blackberries.
During the summer and spring months - the sky is the limit!! :)
I'm still working on my herb garden. It's so fun to use fresh herbs during the season. I'm still trying to figure out how to preserve them for later.

I think this might sound silly, but I'm sort of giddy knowing you stopped by to say hi. :D

I canned some applesauce last fall, but my kids go through it way too fast. I would hate to think how many apples I would have to cook up.

      Thanks for stopping by.

  3. I tried gardening and they did construction in our area on the highway and took out the forrest where the deer, foxes, and other animals lived so they took a little while to find their home. The first year, they thought our house was great even with a 6.5 ft fence, they got in and ate all of my garden. I am hoping to be able to grow again soon. I have rosemary, mint and basil (in the summer) which I can't live without. We love corn on the cob and I just found out that it is good if you freeze it so I am going to try that this year to have some of the goodness into the winter. I guess I will have to sit down and figure out the rest of the fruits and veggies. Can't wait to get a pressure canner and start the process :)
