Is it Time to Prep Yet?
Okay ladies. I have a bit of a problem. This last year, I have been using Analytical Grammar for Jewel. Next year, she will finish it up and Toyota will start it.
Here's the problem: I don't like it. It's too difficult to grade. Too many check marks here. Too many points to tally up. It isn't that I don't think it is a good curriculum, but grading it is a nightmare!
I have used Saxon Grammar and Writing as well as Easy Grammar. I have also used Harvey's Grammar. All of these grammar curriculum are much easier to grade than Analytical.
So, here's something for you all. If you homeschool, what grammar do you use and what do you like about it most?

I'm interested in reading the replies. We've never used a set grammar curriculum. I've tried Easy Grammar, one child did Jensen's Grammar and several did Simply Grammar. But mostly we use Mad Libs, Editor in Chief series and my Shrunk and White book from college. Also, our co-op offers writing classes from about 4th grade up and so we work on grammar as the kids are doing their writing assignments. It's probably not ideal, but it's working for us.
ReplyDeleteI have to admit, I am weak on the writing area. I mean, I know how to write, but the kids aren't getting enough of it in their schooling. I really need to push them more, but the whining that follows with any writing assignment is horrible. :)
DeleteWell, my oldest (9th grade) is using English Grammar 101 (http://englishgrammar101.com/). It's free, on-line with quick daily lessons and AUTOMATIC ON-LINE GRADING/CORRECTING. There's also Daily Grammar (http://www.dailygrammar.com/Workbook.php) which is also free, on-line with quick daily lessons but without the automatic grading of Grammar 101.
ReplyDeleteFor the younger kids, I am going to try Easy Grammar and Daily Grams next year (if we're still homeschooling). We have tried Saxon and *I* like it but the kids don't. Another thing we've done is Foreman Grammar and Writing workbooks (http://www.sfreading.com/resources/ghb.html. They are free, on-line, but need printing out (unless your kids write everything in a notebook). These combine writing AND grammar.
Thanks! I am hearing about a lot of new things.
